Asthma
problem solved |
|
AFM provides cleaner water
at
much lower running costs than sand, however the key issues are that you
reduce the risk to the public from infections disease such as Crypto, and
you minimize the risk of occupational asthma and among your pool staff. |
|
- return in capital in under 12 months , from water, energy and chemical savings
download confirmation spread sheet
- improve water quality and minimise public health risk from contracting infectious diseases, filter media bacterial
levels reduced by 1,000,000 times
- improve air quality and reduce the risk to pool staff from occupation asthma and risk to children from
predisposing them to asthma and respiratory disorders.

Manager Mr. John Andersen says " We have been very please with AFM it has proved to be a cost effective,
reliable and high performance system. We have also had very positive feed back from users who have noticed that the odour is reduced and the water is
crystal clear" AFM filtration media manufactured to drinking water standards has been used by the commercial and private swimming pool industry for many
years with over 100 installation. Quantitative analysis of AFM against sand filtration has been performed and the results are tremendous. AFM
provides a much better water quality, reduced combined chlorine and THMs, much lower risk from bacteria, fungi and parasitic infections. Indeed the
results are of major human health and safety importance.
We believe that AFM is the best available technology (BAT)
available to the swimming pool and Spa industry it is low cost
and can be easily added to any installation. The information is being
presented to the Health & Safety Executive as well as the Health
Protection Agency. We have confirmed that the bacterial levels
in an AFM filter will be on average
one million times lower than an equivalent sand filter containing filter sand.
On a health and safety basis, there can be no excuse for not using AFM.

AFM used in swimming pool water treatment is in compliance with AFM (cert),
material used for effluent treatment must not be used for swimming pools |
| Operational criteria and cost savings |
|
| The flowrate for the filter should ideally be between 10 and 15 cubm/hr per square meter of filter bed surface area. AFM media can be
operated at any flowrate, and in all cases it will out-perform sand or zeolites, however it is a false economy running at fast flowrate.
Operating a filter at a slow flowrate, allows it to remove up to 80% more organic matter and waste from the water as opposed to running at high
rates. High rate filtration therefore results in an increased organic and bacterial content in the water. High rate filtration systems require a
higher degree of chemicalisation, which in turn results in high combined chlorine, poorer water quality and greater risk to the public and pool
staff. AFM filters will have the following benefits;
- lower pressure drop and pump energy savings
- 30% to 80% saving in chlorine consumption
- reduction of elimination of odours
- reduction or elimination of eye irritation
- 50% to 75% lower water consumption, and associated energy savings
- No media disposal costs (could be as high as £500/tonne for sand in a few years)
- stable and predictable performance ( sand deteriorates with age, AFM does not)
- greatly reduced bacteria levels ( up to 1000 times lower with AFM)
- reduced risk from cryptosporidia ( filter much less prone to channelling and worm holes)
The only down side with AFM is that it will be more expensive than sand, however the capital cost will have been recovered after 12 months
and operational costs savings could be as high as £500 per year, every year thereafter per tonne of AFM used in the filtration system.
Coupled with the reduced public health risk, improved water quality and a better swimming experience for the public, all go to make AFM the
media of choice used by local authorities.

Health Protection Agency conference highlights spa pools as a cause of legionnaires’ disease
“It’s been assumed that if the pool water is satisfactory for routine microbiological checks then growth and spread of Legionella would also
be under control. But we discovered that the Legionella bacterium, may be present in high numbers in both privately owned and public facilities
even when routine microbiological and safety checks appear satisfactory.”
