Over 90% of the issues surrounding water quality and clarity relate to solids removal,  AFM® will eliminate most of the problems associated with sand bed coagulation and channelling, which allows your sand filters to continually operate as they were intended.  This will normally result in a 50% reduction in turbidity and double the visibility through the water.  Biological loadings will be reduced by up to 80 %

Quote from a Public Aquarium
"We have had your AFM® in our raw water filters for a few weeks now and have been monitoring the results. Wow what a difference. Backwash is complete and there is no channelling or clumping at all even with our very fine sediments. I wish the aquarium folk would take more cognisance of what is happening in the aquaculture field"

10 key benefits of AFM® over sand

  1. Increases water clarity by removal of colloidal matter
  2. Remove at least 50% more solids from the water, including bacteria, algae and protozoa
  3. Reduce the amount of nitrate produce by reducing the mineralization of protein
  4. High surface negative zeta potential attract +ve charges organic molecules
  5. High surface oxidation potential, helps to crack organics, just like ozone and UVc systems
  6. Use only 1/2 the amount of back-wash water
  7. Removes colour by catalytically cracking organic molecules, due to surface oxidation potential
  8. Adsorbs micron and sub-micron particles including organic molecules (and colour), 100% released on back-wash into waste water
  9. AFM® will not generate solids & bacteria, or periodically dump solids & bacteria into the water.  Sand filters will periodically discharge into the product water, see report on drinking water treatment
  10. Will minimise phosphates,  especially when combined with NoPhos due to high surface zeta potential

At Dryden Aqua, we Manufacture AFM® filtration media. As Marine Biologist we also provide a full range of systems, water quality advise and can act as consultants to trouble shoot any water quality issues

What goes into a filter must come back out

The graph on the right shows the back-wash turbidity profile for sand filters and AFM® filters.

When the filters are back-washed the Turbidity against time profile gives a smooth, predictable and repeatable profile with AFM® . The sand back-wash profile was more erratic.

The area under the curve gives the amount of waste matter back-washed out of the filters confirms that AFM® is removing 25% to 30% more waste from the water than sand.  This data refers to new sand and AFM® filters.  We find that as sand ages the performance continues to deteriorate whereas AFM® stays the same or can actually improve. After about 6 months or more partial channelling of water can start to occur with sand filters, leading to serious reduction in water quality.

Horizontal filters with sand will always channel and should not be used in Aquaria, especially with aquatic mammals.   However changing the sand to AFM® does give the filters a chance to function they way they were inteded.
