| Nitrobac, is a
dried bacterial culture of heterotrophic bacteria that are used to
initiate rapid start up of biofilters in aquaculture and waste water
treatment. The product can also be used for pond and lake remediation.
Bacterial level approx 1000 million bacteria per 100g. In order to use the product, mix the 1 kg with 20 litres of water and aerate for 30 minutes before adding to the system. supplied in 1kg containers Aquaculture Notes. Nitrobac may be used in freshwater or marine system, activate the product as above. Nitrobac can initiate a start up of the biofilters in approx 2 to 3 weeks. procedure 1000 g of Nitrobac is suitable for 20 cubm of media or a biofilter surface area of 10,000 square meters. If the bio-filters and system are new, wash 2 to 3 times with a solution of sodium bicarbonate. Fill with new water free of any potential toxins such as chlorine, and recycle the water around the system. Raise the water temperature to 25 deg C if possible. At this stage there should be no fish in the system, add the Nitrobac. Monitor water quality and feed the system by adding fish feed to the water on a daily basis. Ammonium up to 10mg/l and nitrite up to 5 mg/l may be added. Insure that the phosphate levels do not fall below 5 mg/l and the pH is between 6.8 and 8.4. Once the biofilter has initiated, start to make some water exchanges, or insure that the water quality is suitable for the fish, test with a few fish and then gradually increase the loading. The filter will be unstable for a few weeks, so watch for pH bounce and high ammonium and nitrite levels. Initially there will be no nitrite and nitrate production, this is because of heterotrophic bacterial assimilation of nitrogen which will be the predominant biological process for the first 3 months. |
