Iron removal by Heavy Metal Fix  HMF

iron removal

toxicity of iron

how to use HMF

Iron exerts an extrem toxicological impact on fish and aquatic animals,  there are many techniques that can be used for the reduction of iron,  but they all involve the installation of equipment for  the oxidation and mechanical removal of the iron from the water.  As an alternative approach  it is possible to dose a chemical into the water Heavy Metal Fix (HMF) which sequesters the iron and minimises or prevents it from eliciting a toxicological response by the fish.

It is important that the chemical added to the water does not itself cause the fish or the environment a problem. To achieve this task extensive field trials using HMF at levels of 2mg/l have been used to treat water with concentrations of up to 0.5mg/l  iron.

The HMF does not remove the iron from the water but chelates and flocculates the iron so that it no longer forms small particles that get trapped in the gill lamella.  The same reaction can occur in nature, organic matter, aluminium, calcium, magnesium etc, will all cause chelation and flocculation,  however HMF provides a convenient low cost package that is easy to manage and control.

Our tests have shown that you can dramatically reduce the toxic response to iron,   there is also some evidence to suggest that it will also remove aluminium and other heavy metals from the water.
