Basic Design of a Leachate Treatment System

The treatment of landfill leachate does not present a problem as long as a sound biological approach is adopted, all to often when an engineering approach is adopted it often ends up with major problems or expense. Using applied technology and nature we have developed leachate treatment systems  that have operated for many years with 100% discharge compliance.  Some of our systems have been running for over 15 years of unattended operation except for a site visit every 3 to 6 months.

The table below gives a step by step guide to designing a treatment facility.

stages parameters comments
1 Objectives and desk study The quality and quantity of the leachate is reviewed, and the discharge criteria established
2 Treatability study We have our own laboratory and test bed facility for conducting parallel trials. The water samples are analysed in our laboratory.   Full wet chemistry facilities are available for conducting  water analysis.
3 Sequencing batch reactors Batch reactors using lagoons, tanks or by taking advantage of existing infrastructure. The size and design of the system is consolidated. Dryden Aqua can provide a complete services,  or work with your own contractors.
4 Panel design and process logic Once the basic design layout of the process has been established, the control systems can be designed. Dryden Aqua manufacture and supply a complete systems, we also manufacture the dissolved oxygen probes used in our systems to provide for a high degree of control.  No other company can provide such a complete service in the industry as Dryden Aqua.

5 sizing of aeration systems Venturi injector systems offer some advantages of convenience and economy, however the injectors will destroy bacterial floc and destabilise the system.  At Dryden Aqua we have been manufacturing diffusers for 20 years. The diffusers produce a mass gentle movement of the water which supports the bacterial floc without destroying their structure. Venturi injectors also cause gas supersaturation with nitrogen leading to bulking of the sludge or rupture of the bacterial cell walls.
6 installation of our diffusers We can provide a full installation service, or you may complete the task using your own contractors
7 Stabilised heterotrophic bacterial As biologists we understand the dynamics of activated sludge and the conditions required by the bacteria and other organisms present in the water. 90% of the work is accomplished by the bacteria,  the equipment and infrastructure is only there to support the bacteria.
6 AFM filtration AFM filtration is a form of sand filtration using AFM filter media. AFM effectively takes the place of a large reed bed system. AFM prevents the discharge of solids, and allows us to recycle the bacterial cell biomass.  The use of AFM filtration makes a dramatic improvement to the performance of any leachate treatment system, and is much more stable than a reed bed. How man reed beds are still working after 5 years, or even 3 years ?. afmfilt.jpg (73331 bytes)
7 Final stages We are now working on the designs to actually cultivate fish in the discharge from landfill sites in the form of a natural lake habitats.
