Drinking water and public health
Dr LEE Jong-wook, Director-General, World Health Organization. Sanitation is one of the primary drivers of public health. I often refer to it as Health 101, which means that once we can secure access to clean water and to adequate sanitation facilities for all people, irrespective of the difference in their living conditions, a huge battle against all kinds of diseases will be won."
Also from WHO, 6% of all disease in Europe is from drinking water, of these infections 50% is due to Cryptosporidiosis.
Dryden Aqua technology has the potential to eliminate the disease and at the same time reduce the operating cost of treating drinking water. We are able to achieve this task because Dryden Aqua are perhaps the only marine biological based company that have examined and understand media bed filtration systems and the techniques used by nature to disinfect water. Dryden Aqua have harnessed the properties of nature and our system work in harmony to provide clean clear water. At Dryden Aqua we have proven solutions to many of the water quality problems. We are performing well, however because of the huge inertia to change and the lag time for the implementation of new technology it will take sometime before we have a major impact, in this context any dissemination and support would be welcomed.
| AFM® (active filter media) | Most of our drinking water is filtered by sand in sand filters. However it is impossible to prevent bacterial fouling and worm-hole channelling. This means there is a conduit through which untreated water can pass straight through the filter bed. Indeed solids, chemicals bacteria and parasites collected on the sand bed surface can all suddenly pass through the filter as a wormhole opens up and then closes. This means that high transient concentrations will be present in the product water from the filters. The oocysts of cryptosporidium is but one of the parasites that will pass through the filter, and because it is resistant to chlorine the organism can not be controlled unless wormhole channelling is prevented. AFM® eliminates channels so he problem is solved, AFM® is also the only manufactured filter media in the UK certified under Reg31 of the Drinking Water Inspectorate. |
| Membrane filtration for drinking water treatment and THM`s | Ultra membrane filtration down to 0.01 microns will remove all viri, bacterial and parasites from the water, the processes is gaining favour for the treatment of water as well as seawater prior to desalination. However UF filtration will not remove particles smaller than 0.01 microns, or most dissolved organic components. The dissolved organics will act as a bacterial food source and bacteria will grow to foul the membranes in desalination systems and pipe work in drinking water systems. If chlorine is then used after UF filtration to control bacterial grow the chlorine will react with he organic matter to produce high levels of THM`s trihalomethane as well as other disinfection by-products many of which are extremely toxic and implicated in disease such as cancer. However if AFM® media bed filtration is used with pre coagulation and flocculation then all particles in the water will be removed down to micron and sub-micron particle sizes. AFM® does not provide absolute filtration like UF but it will give nominal filtration down to the same level but at he same time it will remove the dissolved organic bacterial food component. This means that with AFM® there will be less fouling of RO membranes in desalination, it also means that you can chlorine in network distribution systems without forming THM`s. DrydenAqua AFM® filtration is therefore a more efficient technology than UltraFiltration and it is 1/20th of the cost. |
| Coagulation and chemical genesis | AFM® filter media carries a surface negative zeta potential, standard coagulants such as APF (Active Poly-floc), PAC ( poly-aluminium chloride) and the organic coagulants will drop the zeta potential of the water and remove negative charge components. However the coagulants miss some of the smaller negatively charged chemicals as well as all of the positive charge components such as ammonium. Dryden Aqua have therefore developed a new coagulant that will react with positive charge ions and organics. When injected into the water before APF any residual left in the water will react for form an insoluble precipitate of feldspars that can be engineered to absorb organics and ion exchange with cations such as ammonium. When the AFM® filter is back-washed all of the chemicals and organics removed. |
| ACO | Active Chemical Oxidation, most disinfection reactions are oxidative, ACO is the first water treatment catalysts that is energised by Dryden Aqua ZPMr unit to disinfect water. The chemicals are not consumed in the process and no residuals are generated. |
| WaterWasp | The WaterWasp is a new device presently under development. The device will control mosquito larval growth as well as bacterial parasites and viri, and all this is achieved in a low cost self powered device without the use of any chemicals. For the first time it looks like there may be a means of economically and effectively controlling the spread of mosquito and water born disease in tropical countries. |
