The boat used in the Mini-Transat is A Open
6.50 (otherwise known as Mini's). The class is an open design so the
boats can be whatever design that you want. But there are a few rules
heir are some of the main ones:
- Max length: 6.50 meters
- Max beam: 3.00 meters
- Max draft: 2.00 meters
- Max height of boat from keel to tip
of mast: 14.00 meters
- Max number of sails: 8
The Class is splint into two divisions
Prototypes and Productions
Prototypes Boats:
Prototype boats have the newest cutting edge
technology. These boats are designed with only one thing in mind, to go
as fast as possible.
Newer prototype boats are often made completely out of carbon fiber to
be lightweight and strong. They have varies different ideas built into
them, like a canting keels and wing masts. All just to get the same thing
SPEED and a lot of it.
But the disadvantage of prototype boats is their cost. Because of there
modern technologies used in their construction they are very
expensive.
Some new prototype boats can cost sometimes as much as twice the price
of a production boat.
Production Boats:
Production boats have more rules in there
design such as less exotic building materials and a smaller mast. But
that dose not mean that all production boats are the same. A builder
need to have built at least 10 boats in the same yard before they can be
classed as a production boat. This means that they are a lot less
expensive,
The main advantage to have a production boat is that they are less
expensive, but in the opinion of some people they have a huge
disadvantage, they are slower.
