ATO Energysaving, with Merlin Entertainment and other partners, implemented an energy-saving initiative at Sealife Istanbul for its 5-million-liter ocean tank.

The Challenges:

  • High energy consumption due to compromised hydraulic lay-out, needing significant amount of energy to get circulation (2x 37kW, 2x 30kW & 4x 15kW).
  • Lack of bottom and side drains in the tank design, leading to inefficient waste capture and excessive detritus buildup, requiring daily siphoning.
  • Protein skimmers underperformed as waste failed to reach the LSS.
  • Ineffective biological filtration caused by insufficient waste retention time in the filters, caused by not well spreading of water on the bio filter area
  • Significant water and salt usage for siphoning and backwashing

The Solution:

  • Replaced sand in the filters with AFM® (Activated Filter Media), enhancing filtration and stabilizing ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) levels, enabling automatic ozone generator shutdown and reducing energy consumption.
  • Implementation of 17 highly efficient AFC400 propeller pumps and adjustments of speed to the existing pumps and taking offline the 37kW pumps.
  • Optimized water flow with AFC400 pumps, to keep detritus suspended, reducing daily siphoning demands.
  • Enhanced retention time and even water flow through biological filters for better nitrification performance.
  • Reduced backwash intervals, saving water and salt.

Pumps energy usage 1’250 MWh/year 550 MWh/year
Power use of pump of filters 200 MWh/year <100 MWh/year
Backwash interval Twice a week Once a week
Backwash volume 2500m3/year 600m3/year
Water to be reclaimed 10 million liters 2.4 million liters
Circulation in the tank 2.1 million liters/h 3.4 million liters/h

Results:

  • 700’000 kWh are saved per year
  • The optimized circulation system increased water movement by over 50%, improving cleanliness within the tank and reducing detritus buildup.
  • The reduction in detritus accumulation decreased the need for siphoning and backwash operations, which in turn saved water and salt.
  • The frequency of backwashing was halved.
  • AFM® improved water quality and stabilized ORP, minimizing the need for chemical additives such as ozone.
